The Rise of Mobile Search Traffic But Are Local Businesses Ready?

Many UK business owners have still yet to realize just how much new business there is waiting for them in their local marketing place, simply by tapping into mobile search traffic.

From research that we undertook of mobile users searching for local businesses in the Milton Keynes and London area, we discovered that there was anywhere between 8% to as much as 50% of online traffic that was not being properly targeted by local businesses. That business is going to end up somewhere, but many businesses are losing out because their marketing focus and strategy is off key.

Businesses need to understand what is happening in their marketplace and start thinking out of the box. The combination of the internet and the fast pace of technological change means that things are changing around us by the day. Buying behaviour is changing super fast and businesses need to be much more vigilant on where their customers and potential customers are hanging out so that they can position their business to correctly tap into those new marketplaces.

A look at the psychology of mobile smartphone users i.e. the primary psychology mobile search traffic

The reality is that because of the internet and mobile technology, people are not spending as much time in front of the TV or reading the newspaper as they used to and this trend in on the increase.

Just last week I picked up a really interesting piece by John Stepak in MoneyWeek, which was not so much about mobile search traffic but on the next big investment opportunity. Anyway, I wanted to share part of the article here because it makes some very good point. Here is an abstract of the article  entitled “The Rise of The Smart Machines” which talks about the smartphone trend.

The Rise In Mobile Search Traffic

In its latest Visual Network Index report, network equipment maker Cisco notes that global mobile data traffic alone more than doubled in 2011 for the fourth year running. In terms of scale, the quantity of mobile data traffic sent last year was eight times the size of the entire global internet in 2000.

This is primarily due to the rise of the smartphone (mobile phones such as Apple’s iPhone that connect users to the internet). Smartphone usage nearly tripled in 2011. While they account for just 12% of global handsets, they account for more than 82% of global handset traffic.

That’s because they enable people to send and receive larger, more data-heavy applications, such as video content – which accounted for more than half of global mobile traffic for the first time last year. Tablet computers, such as the iPad, are also becoming increasingly popular.

By the end of this year, Cisco reckons that the number of mobile connected devices will exceed the world’s population. By 2016, data traffic will have grown 18-fold – that’s a compound annual growth rate of 78%. Within this, machine to machine traffic is expected to grow 22-fold by 2016. That takes you from a current level of around 1.3 exabytes (EB) a month (to see how big an EB is, see the column on the right) to 10.8 EBs a month. To read the full scoop click here.
